While British India coins dominate the antique market, the Republic of India has produced several key rarities that command high premiums among serious collectors.
The 1939 Silver Rupee
The 1939 King George VI solid silver rupee is incredibly rare because almost the entire mintage was melted down when silver content was reduced in 1940.
The 1982 One Rupee Mumbai Mint
Most 1 Rupee coins from 1982 were minted in Kolkata with no mint mark. A very tiny number were struck at the Mumbai mint with the diamond mark, making this one of the rarest modern Indian coins.
Commemorative Rarities
Certain commemorative issues with specific error dates are incredibly rare. Always research before selling what appears to be an ordinary commemorative coin.
