Whether you collect antique coins or rare stamps, proper preservation is the key to maintaining their value and beauty for future generations. Environmental factors are the biggest enemies of any collection.
1. Climate Control is Crucial
High humidity causes stamps to tone or stick to album pages (foxing) and causes coins to develop unattractive oxidation or "bronze disease". Store your collections in a cool, dry place. Silica gel packets in your safe or storage cabinet can help manage moisture.
2. Proper Handling
For stamps, always use high-quality stamp tongs, never your bare hands. Oils and dirt from your skin will transfer to the paper. For coins, handle them only by the edges, preferably while wearing clean cotton gloves. Never touch the face of a Proof or Uncirculated coin.
3. Use the Right Storage Materials
Never store coins in PVC (polyvinyl chloride) plastic flips, as the chemicals will break down and leave a damaging green slime on the metal. Use Mylar or PVC-free holders. For stamps, use acid-free, archival-quality stock books and mounts.
4. Resist the Urge to Clean
We cannot stress this enough: do not clean your coins. Polishing removes the top layer of metal and destroys the coin's numismatic value. For stamps, never attempt to erase marks or wash them without expert knowledge.
