Proper storage is the difference between preserving a coin value and destroying it. Environmental damage can ruin a valuable antique coin in just a few years.
The Danger of PVC
The most common mistake beginners make is storing coins in cheap plastic flips containing PVC (Polyvinyl Chloride). Over time PVC releases acidic gases that form a sticky green residue on coins permanently etching the metal.
Safe Storage Options
Always use PVC-free Mylar flips for individual coins. Acrylic capsules provide excellent protection against physical damage and environmental exposure. Ensure album pages are acid-free.
Environmental Control
Store your collection in a cool dry place. High humidity causes bronze disease in copper coins and dark ugly toning on silver. Use silica gel desiccants in your storage safe to control moisture.
