A pile of loose stamps in an envelope is not a collection—it is a disaster waiting to happen. Organizing your stamps into a proper album protects them and allows you to enjoy their beauty and history.
1. Choose the Right Album
For beginners, a pre-printed album with spaces for specific countries or themes is a great start. If you prefer flexibility, use a stock book (which has clear strips to slide stamps into) or blank pages where you design the layout yourself.
2. Hinges vs. Mounts
Never use tape or standard glue on a stamp! Historically, collectors used "hinges" (small, folded pieces of gummed paper). Today, for mint or valuable stamps, it is highly recommended to use clear, plastic stamp mounts. Mounts encase the stamp without applying adhesive directly to it.
3. Organize by Theme or Geography
Decide how you want to present your stamps. Chronologically by country is the traditional method. However, "topical" collecting—organizing by subjects like trains, birds, or space exploration—is incredibly popular and visually striking.
4. Work in a Clean Environment
Always work on a clean, dry surface. Keep food and drinks away. Use stamp tongs (not tweezers, which have sharp edges) to gently handle the stamps to prevent oil transfer from your fingers.
