India has one of the oldest and most fascinating postal histories in Asia. Collecting Indian stamps is a journey through colonial expansion, independence and modern statehood.
The Scinde Dawk (1852)
The story begins in the Sindh province in 1852 with the Scinde Dawk, the first adhesive postage stamps used in Asia. These were embossed on brittle paper and are exceedingly rare and fragile today.
East India Company and the Crown
In 1854 the first all-India stamps were issued featuring a profile of Queen Victoria. These lithographed stamps lacked perforations and had to be cut with scissors. Later issues under the British Crown became highly standardized.
Post-Independence India
India first post-independence stamps were issued in 1947 depicting the Ashoka Pillar, the new Indian flag and an aircraft symbolizing progress. Since then India Post has issued thousands of commemorative stamps celebrating culture, wildlife and leaders, making it a vibrant field for thematic collectors.
